Ministry distributes meningitis vaccines to inoculate 2.2 million people |
| Addis Ababa, March 2, 2006 (wic) - The Ministry of Health disclosed that it has distributed meningitis vaccines which would enable to inoculate 2.2 million people in a bid to preempt the disease that usually breaks out during the dry season. Integrated Diseases Surveillance and Control Team leader with the Ministry, Sister Tiruwork Tafesse, and Dr. Abdul Selam Kelil, an expert in the same team told WIC that vaccine worth 7.9 million birr was disbursed to regional states to prevent meningitis. Information network has also been established at regional, zonal and woreda levels with health professionals and pertinent offices to preempt epidemic diseases including meningitis. Sister Tiruwok and Dr. Abdul Selam Kelil said as the disease usually surfaces from January to May it would be crucial on the part of the professionals to report any outbreak of possible epidemic of meningitis immediately. The Ministry has also been undertaking integrated surveillance and control activities on 22 selected communicable disease which cause 80 percent deaths and illness in the country,it was learnt. |
