MoH training over 2,200 nurses to become health officers

Addis Ababa, May 07, 2007 (WIC) – Ministry of Health (MoH) is reportedly training 2,258 nurses drawn from across the nation to make them health officers this budget year.

The ministry told WIC that the nurses drawn from 20 hospitals are attending the training in five governmental universities.

The training aims at producing the human resource required for the new health centers which would be opened in line with the third health sector development program, reduce maternal mortality and prepare qualified professionals for surgical treatment.

In addition, a curriculum has been designed to train health officers at second-degree level in the fields of emergency, maternity and surgery and added that it is also preparing to train nurses at degree level.

Health professionals in eight hospitals where there are no gynecologists have been given training on surgery and anesthesia in a bid to enhance gynecology and obstetrics in hospitals, the ministry noted.

It further indicated that it is supplying the necessary construction and transport services that assist the activities of hospitals and build their capacities.
