Ethiopia makes progress in reducing child deaths: Save the Children |
|
Addis Ababa, May 10, 2007 - Ethiopia has seen a 20 percent reduction in child death rates in the past 15 years but still ranked one of the worst places to be a mother, Save the Children said. In its eighth annual state of the World’s Mothers report issued Wednesday, Save the Children said 20 of the 60 developing countries in the Child Survival Progress Rankings have either made no progress in reducing deaths among children under age five, or their mortality rates have increased since 1990. “While we are pleased that Ethiopia is working to address the Millennium Development Goal of reducing deaths of children younger than five by 2015, this cannot be accomplished without also investing in the health of mothers.” Save the Children USA Country Director, Margaret Schuler said. Save the Children recommends in the report that ensuring the well being of mothers, developing and implementing a standard training guideline for health extension workers and increasing fund and improving strategies to provide basic, effective, life saving services are vital to improve children’s and mothers’ health. “The government of Ethiopia, the donor community, NGOs and our local community partners need to redouble efforts and commitments to ensure that we kick off the Ethiopian Millennium by focusing on the future health of the country-our children.” Margaret said.
