EPRDF Executive Committee begins assessing third quarter year performance of federal gov't

Addis Ababa, May 11 (WIC) - The Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) yesterday began assessing the performance of the federal government over the past three months.

The Executive Committee in its regular meeting deliberated on report presented regarding activities carried out towards stabilizing the macro economy, execution of infrastructural facilities, expansion of foreign trade and investment as well as support given to regional states.

The Executive Committee assessed the short- and long-term solutions designed to control inflation witnessed in the country amid high economic growth registered for the past successive years.

It was indicated that the inflation is the result of the price hike occurred at international level as well as the market system in the country which is at low level, among others.

Apart from putting forward a lasting remedy for the problem, the government has been subsidizing various consumable items in order to ease the economic burden on low-income groups.

The Executive Committee has reached consensus that the activities underway to control the inflation should further be enhanced along side of rectifying drawbacks witnessed on execution.

The committee also dwelt on activities carried out to expand telecommunications, electric power and potable water services as well the road sector, among others.

The efforts exerted to expand telecom services has lifted up the service coverage in both the urban and rural parts of the country within a short span of time and the committee further urged for more attention towards ensuring quality of the services.

As to the provision of electric power service, it was disclosed that power shortage has been witnessed in the country due to the emergence of several industries, expansion of rural electrification services, as well as the delay of the belg rain.

The execution of hydroelectric power plants on Tekeze, Gilgel Gibe II and Tana Beles Rivers that have a generating capacity of over 1,200 Mega Watt has reportedly been nearing completion and would solve the power shortage reliably.

The Executive Committee also indicated that the construction of roads in the country should continue with more enhanced manner.

As to the provision of potable water, the committee underlined the need to aggressively expand the service to keep abreast with the rapidly growing towns in the country.

It was also indicated that foreign trade and investment activities in the country are rapidly expanding and the revenue the country secured from export items shipped to abroad this budget year has shown a sharp increase.

The support rendered to regional states has also been consolidated in the past three months and more attention was given to agriculture, health, education services and towards ensuring good governance.

The Executive committee also agreed on deepening the efforts underway to expand the construction of condominium houses and development of micro and small scale enterprises.

The Executive Committee also continues its regular meeting today, it was learnt.
