Constitution contributes to ensure rights of citizens, speed up development: Meles

Addis Ababa, December 7 (WIC) – Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Ethiopia’s constitution significantly contributed to ensure the rights of nations, nationalities and peoples and also to speed up development in the country.

In an interview with an annual magazine called “Hibre Biher”, PM Meles said group rights enshrined in the constitution laid foundation to ensure the rights of citizens and build a unified country.

Meles said this helped to bring about rapid development and enabled citizens to benefit from equal rights.

The Premier said the constitution is instrumental to build democracy and consensus among the nations, nationalities and peoples and also to bring about peace and rapid development in the country.

The constitution is modern as it has also incorporated economic, social and regional affairs in addition to the political rights, he said.

Ensuring equal benefits of nations, nationalities and peoples has been contributing share towards renaissance of the country.

The constitution, which is designed based on the principles of democracy, will help to undertake activities enabling to inculcate democratic culture among the public, Meles said.
