About 900 S. Sudanese refugees arriving Ethiopia daily

About 900 South Sudanese refugees are arriving in Ethiopia daily on average, said the Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA).

Of the refugees fleeing to Ethiopia since early last month, women and children took the highest number, said Estifanos Gebremedhin, Director of Legal Department at ARRA.

The number of refugees crossing into Ethiopia increased because of unrest and El Nino fuelled drought occurred in South Soudan last year, he said.

The administration, in partnership with Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) is providing the necessary support for the refuges starting from border areas. 

The refugees are being provided with food, potable water and necessary medical assistance at a camp established at border areas in Gambella Regional State, he said.

According to Estifanos, about 32,000 South Sudanese refugees have so far arrived in Ethiopia since early last month. 

Currently, Ethiopia hosts 800,000 refugees who came from various countries.
