Deputy PM reaffirms to closely work with Sudan

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the FDRE, Demeke Mekonnen

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the FDRE, Demeke Mekonnen reaffirmed that his government firmly committed to work closely with the Government of the Republic of the Sudan in all bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of common interest.

Demeke in his opening remarks at the Ethiopia-Sudan High-Level Political Committee Meeting announced that Ethiopia will always attach great importance to its bilateral relationships with Sudan.

The role of border trade that involves and benefits communities around the two countries’ common border is crucial in ensuring peace and stability in the border area, he noted.

The government of Ethiopia is concerned about recent development in the border areas. Furthermore, it is endangering the agreements the two countries have reached to maintain the status quo in the area north of Mount Daglish, the Deputy noted.

According to his remarks, the government of Ethiopia believes that securitization and unnecessary escalation will only worsen the situation and create pointless tension in the border area and disrupt the daily activities of people living in the border area.

He also appreciates the people and government of Sudan for the unwavering support and understanding for law and order enforcement operation in the Tigray Region.
