DPM, FM Demeke Briefs Diplomatic Community In Addis

Addis Ababa, September 1, 2022 (Walta) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen and State Minister Ambassador Tesfaye briefed today Addis Ababa-based diplomats and representatives of international organizations about current developments in Ethiopia.

At the briefing, Demeke focused on the conflict that the TPLF had just re-ignited, the present humanitarian situation, and the federal government’s continued efforts to bring the conflict to a peaceful conclusion.

Mr. Demeke said that the TPLF has been violating the spirit of the humanitarian truce through hostile rhetoric, recruiting child soldiers, and engaging in public mobilization planning for yet another round of hostilities.

Mr. Demeke thanked the countries that supported the federal government’s attempts to stop further violence in Ethiopia and questioned the motivations of some groups that still provide support to the TPLF.

The TPLF’s latest wave of attacks on the Amhara and Afar areas, which began on August 23, 2022, will not be accepted, he reaffirmed, adding that the government is committed to taking all necessary steps to prevent the TPLF from victimizing these communities once more.

The Government of Ethiopia has been taking measures against the terrorist group with utmost care to avoid civilian casualties extending alerts to protect themselves and stay away from military installations, he said.

He asserted that despite the TPLF’s victimhood tactics, which include blaming and demonizing the government and asserting fictitious wins, the Ethiopian government will continue to uphold its constitutional obligations to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of all Ethiopians.

Speaking on humanitarian situations, he appreciated the fruits of the humanitarian truce in alleviating the dire conditions of people in Tigray.

Further urging some parties, including the head of the WHO, to desist from acting beyond recognized mandates, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister welcomed humanitarian partners and international organizations that honestly and impartially served the people.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister stated that despite the escalating hostilities, the Ethiopian government is dedicated to achieving peace, in contrast to the TPLF, which continued to impose conditions and disparage the AU-led peace process.

In summarizing his remarks, he stated some groups should stop equating the government with the outlawed terrorist organization and take measures that will worsen the conflict and threaten Ethiopia’s sovereignty.

Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister responded to the queries and remarks raised by the audience.
