Eritrea Accuses TPLF for Planning Fresh Attacks Against it

Addis Ababa, May 18, 2022 (Walta) – Eritrea accuses the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of plotting to launch attacks against Eritrea in a bid to reclaim what the TPLF claims as a lost territory.

The TPLF launched multiple rockets towards the Eritrean capital, Asmara, in November 2020, right after it launched a surprise attack against Ethiopia’s National Defense Force Northern Command.

Eritrea’s accusations came days after TPLF forces and Eritrean forces clashed in Badme and Rama towns that lie along the Ethio-Eritrean border.

“It was no secret that TPLF leaders were preparing for new military attacks,” said the Eritrean Minister of Information, Yemane G. Meskel, in a Twitter post he made yesterday.

“Their main target is to occupy our land recognized by international law as the sovereign territory of Eritrea again and to commit hatred-driven looting and atrocities on Eritrean soil once again,” he added.

“TPLF’s plot has the blessing and support of western powers. Western are rushing to deliver grain, medicine, fuel, and other supplies in the name of humanitarian assistance before TPLF starts the new war,” the minister concluded.

TPLF leadership and Eritrea have been at odds since the Ethio –Eritrea border war of 1998. The Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives has labeled TPLF as a terrorist organization.
