Ethiopia Welcomes the Statement by the Creditors Committee

Ministry of Finance

Addis Ababa, August 24, 2022 (Walta) – The Ethiopian Government welcomed bilateral creditor countries for their work to provide Ethiopia the necessary financing assurance in line with the overall strategy of the government to reduce its debt burden from high to moderate, said the Ministry of Finance in a statement.

“The Government of Ethiopia thanks the Creditors Committee for their commitment and looks forward to an expeditious conclusion of the debt treatment discussion,” it said.

“We also appreciate the continued engagement of the IMF in designing a new program to support Ethiopia’s ambitious economic growth,” it added.

The Creditors Committee formed to review Ethiopia’s request for debt treatment under the Common Framework beyond Debt Service Suspension Initiative met to discuss pending issues in light of the discussion between the Government of Ethiopia and the IMF on July 19, 2022.

Following the announcement of the request for debt treatment by the Government of Ethiopia, the Creditor Committee has met four times.

In the due course, the government provided the creditors with all the relevant debt stock data and Ethiopia’s strategy to manage its debt vulnerabilities in the long term.
