Letesenbet Gidey Breaks World Half-Marathon Record

Addis Ababa October 25, 2021 (Walta) – Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey smashed the women’s half marathon world record by running 62 minutes and 52 seconds in Valencia.

Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia smashed the world half marathon record with 1:02:52 at Valencia half-marathon, an average of 2:59 min/km! She took more than a minute off Ruth Chepngetich’s 1:04:02 in Istanbul last April. Second placed Yalemzerf Yehualaw again dipped under 1:04 (1:03:51) after her previous result of 1:03:44 at Antrim Coast half was not ratified due to a short course.

According to World Record, Abel Kipchumba of Kenya won the men’s race in 58:07, edging fellow countryman Rhonex Kipruto in the final meters of the race.
