UAE Contributes 60 million USD to Humanitarian Response in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, July 19, 2022 (Walta) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) contributes  60 million USD to support the humanitarian response in Ethiopia said the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in a statement bit released today.

“The funding will provide emergency food and nutrition assistance in response to an alarming rise in food insecurity,” said the WEP.

According the UN food agency more than 13 million people require humanitarian food assistance in conflict-affected Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions.

“The UAE fund delivered through the Famine Relief Fund will allow WFP to address the urgent food needs of 1.6 million people in the conflict-affected part of north Ethiopia through food distributions in Tigray, Afar and Amhara,” it added.

The combination of conflict, climate shocks and the economic impacts of COVID-19 have deteriorated the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia.  Added to the basket of problem is the recent crisis in Ukraine and the soaring inflation which is at peak in almost ten year.

New contributions from the UAE and other key donors have allowed WFP to continue scaling up its operations in Northern Ethiopia during a critical time for communities ahead of the planting season and since the Government’s announcement of a humanitarian truce in March, said the food agency.

WFP-led convoys have been flowing into Tigray at pace over the past ten weeks, over 3,800 trucks have delivered over 130,000 tones of food and other lifesaving humanitarian supplies, it added.
