UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights to Visit Addis

Addis Ababa, May 18 2022 (Walta) – The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Ilze Brands Kehris, will visit Addis Ababa from May 20 to 23, 2022.

According to a stamen released by the UN Human Rights Commission, the Assistant Secretary-General arrives in Addis Ababa to attend the launch of the African Union, European Union and United Nations joint project for the enhancement and operationalization of the African Union Compliance and Accountability Framework.

The partnership project aims to ensure AU peace support operations are planned and conducted in compliance with international human rights law including regional human rights instruments and international humanitarian law as well as applicable standards of conduct and discipline.

Brands Kehris is currently in South Sudan for a three-day visit. The Assistant Secretary-General is scheduled to meet national and local authorities of South Sudan. In addition to the authorizes, she will meet with civil society representatives and human rights defenders in addition to international and regional partners. She will visit sites for internally displaced people in Juba and Yei.

Brands Kehris will have exchanges with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and the United Nations Country Team to discuss ongoing efforts to promote human rights, peace and justice.
