US Donates 488 Million USD to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, July 27, 2022 (Walta) – The US announced 488 million USD in humanitarian assistance for Ethiopia.

The aid will help the nation to respond to a prolonged drought that’s threatening the survival of millions of people.

According to Tracy Ann Jacobson, Charge de – affaires of U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia, the aid will be used for 4 point 8 million citizens who need immediate humanitarian assistance this year due to the drought.

The funding will target about 7.4 million people in need of immediate food assistance by providing sorghum, yellow split peas and vegetable oil, according to a statement by the US Agency for International Development.

USAID’s Ethiopia announcement follows a commitment of 476 million USD to help Somalia, where a similarly unprecedented drought has left more than 7 million people food insecure.

USAID’s administrator, Samantha Power, said July 19 that the US will provide nearly 1.2 billion USD to help meet the immediate humanitarian needs in the horn of Africa.
