Benshangul-Gumuz resource conservation reaches 67 percent

 

The Benshangul-Gumuz region said that natural resource conservation campaign, which is being underway in the region’s 20 Woredas since first week of January this year has reached 67 percent.

More than 138 thousand residents have been taking part in the campaign. 

The campaign was started after the region offered intensive trainings for leaders drawn from each Woreda and agricultural extension workers.

Region’s Agriculture Bureau Natural Resources Department Head, Demise Mera, told WIC the campaign is lagging behind the set schedule for completion.

 According to him, the coincidence of precipitation and deep reform programs caused delay of conservation campaign.

He said that deep reform program, which was lasted for 38 days swayed leaders from leading the campaign

The campaign will be completed by first week of May, according to him.

He said that the main activities the people will do are among others, terracing and nursing of seedlings for coming rainy season so that conserved areas should be afforested.

According to him, so far, the conservation campaign covers over 28,140 hectares of land out of the planned 42,000 hectares.
