Ethiopian detainees in Malawi to arrive tonight

Addis Ababa, 27 November 2015 (WIC) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia disclosed that 224 Ethiopians will be repatriated from Malawi tonight.

According to spokesperson of the Ministry, Tewelde Mulugeta, 387 Ethiopians were detained in Malawi for entering to the country illegally and having no proper travel document.  Out of the total, 167 were returned home earlier while others remained there, Tewelde said.

The spokesperson noted that 224 of Ethiopians detained in Malawi will be  repatriated tonight via a chartered airplane.  He also remarked that the Ethiopian Embassy in Nairobi and the Main Department  for Immigration and Nationality Affairs have played their respective roles in the process of repatriating the citizens by preparing the necessary travel documents and following their cases properly.

Tewelde also noted that the processes of returning Ethiopians back home are cumbersome since there are legal issues to be accomplished before repatriation.

The Ministry spokesperson also made public the signing of memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Turkmenistan to open an embassy in their respective capital cities. He also highlighted the discussion the Minister of Foreign Affair had with the president of Gulmudukul province of the Republic of Somalia and Ethiopia’s role in maintaining peace and stability there.
