Fake scholarship, Khat smuggling make Ethiopians land in China’s jail

The fake scholarship facilitated by brokers, and smuggling Khat have made Ethiopians living China to end up in jail, according to spokesperson of Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Spokesperson, Nebiyat Getachew said that the broker facilitated fake scholarship grant has helped the number of Ethiopians illegally traveling to china to increase, and eventually end up in jail along with other Ethiopians who have involved in the smuggling addicting plant(khat).

He said that so far 47 Ethiopians have got imprisoned after being acussed of smuggling Khat, murder, theft and cyber-crime, living in China without resident permit and working without work permit.

Recently, 57 Ethiopian died after the boat carrying them capsized off coast of Obok in Djibouti in a journey which the spokespersons said was illegal.

He also said the Ethiopian who entered in Djibouti with the aim of crossing to Yemen has reached to 12 thousand.

In a diplomatic effort the country has made after PM Abiy Ahmed came to power,  many Ethiopian who were languishing in prisons of  several countries were repatriated, and still being repatriated.
