Gov’t taking measures to ensure rule of law: Premier

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) briefed journalists about current Ethiopian affairs at his office. He also responded to questions raised by the journalists.

Replying to question regarding rule of law, the Prime Minister said previously, the government had been taking stern and inappropriate measures in violation of human rights to ensure respect for the rule of law. But now, he said, it has been taking measures in accordance with the law.

The government has brought to justice those who are responsible for the loss of lives and property damage caused in Burayu, Gedeo, Wollega, Somali and Benishangul Gumuze regional states, he said.

Responding to question regarding conflicts arising in connection with land ownership, the Prime Minister said” this would get answer in accordance with the Constitution.”

He further said the government would tighten measures to control illicit movement of firearms.

When asked about the upcoming 4th population and housing census, the Prime Minister said the decision to postpone the census was made based on the recommendation of experts.

He further said board efforts are underway in collaboration with local elders and religious leaders to reinstate displaced community members.

The Prime Minister further said a lot of diplomatic gains were made during the past one year.

Various countries, including neighboring countries, provided support to the reform initiatives financially and by deploying experts.

The reform will be sustainable if it is backed by Ethiopians, he said, further calling on media to discharge their responsibilities in creating a platform that strengthens unity of the people. (FBC)
