Ethiopia set to host World Refugee Day

The National Intelligence and Security Service Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs said that Ethiopia is set to host the 17th world refugee day at Gambella regional state on June 20.

Deputy Director with the Administration, Zeinu Jemal, during a press conference held yesterday said that the day will be marked under the theme “We Stand together with Refugees”. Ethiopia will be the first country in Africa to host the day.

Zeinu added that the UNHCR has decided Ethiopia to host the day by the long standing history of showing its hospitability to  many refugees.

It was noted in the press conference that Ethiopia has hosted over 850,000 refugees from 21 different countries in 26 refugee comps.

According to Zeinu, the decision is a manifestation of a success of Ethiopia in foreign policy and security strategies and above all it is an assurance of Ethiopia’s acceptance on a world stage and global recognition as a refugee welcoming country.

Ethiopia has become one of the first top five refugee hosting country in the world, Walta learnt.
