Ethiopia confirms over 2.5 million people internally displaced

A supervision team established by House of Peoples’ Representative (HoPR) in Ethiopia announced that over 2.5 million people internally displaced due ethnic conflicts.

A team, which traveled to Tigray, Amhara, Oromia and South Peoples’ Nations, Nationalities regions, confirms to HoPR  today that 111,465 displaced people sheltered far north in Tigray region, while 107,097 people sought refuge in Amhara region.   

However, Oromia and South Peoples’ Nations, Nationalities regions have been appeared to affected in greater magnitude with hosting 1, 444,720 and 873,222 displaced people, respectively.

According to the team, the displaced people, who  live in make-shift camps are suffering from lack of education and nutritious food in that it urged the government to facilitate community reconciliation so that the people will return back to their previous villages.

Minister of Peace, Muferiat Kamil said that with efforts the government made, so far 760 people are returned back to their village.

The coordinator of the supervision team, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen also pledged to stop displacement of the people, and help the displaced ones establish permanent life.
