Ethiopia on a day of mourning for former president

Today, May 6, 2019, is declared to be a national day of mourning for the late president Negasso Gidada by the House of People’s Representatives

Flags are being hoisted at half-mast throughout the country, Ethiopian embassies and consulates and ships.

The late president was laid to rest yesterday and his funeral was attended by many former and current higher officials within the government and the private sectors.

Dr Negasso passed away on Saturday, April 27 at the age of 75 while receiving treatment in Germany.

He was President of Ethiopia from 1995 to 2001. He was also a founding member of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF).

He is survived by three children.
