New Ethiopian law gives women longer maternity leave

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) on Thursday revised the existing labor law to give women longer maternity leaves and extend new employee probation period.

The newly revised bill grants female workers an extended period of maternal leave, according to the Reporter. It also extends the period of probation for employees who are newly recruited.

The revised bill, reviewed by the Women, Youth and Social Affairs standing Committee, gives female employees at least 120 days of maternal leave, including a one-month pre-natal leave and a three-month post-natal leave, making it one of the most generous labor laws in the world.

In the US, for example, the law requires employers to give at least 12 weeks of unpaid leave for maternity purposes. However, many companies have more generous maternity leave plans than the minimum required by federal law.

The employment bill extends the probation period of employees from the current 45 days to 60 days. Probabtion is a period during which an employee is considered temporary and can be terminated for any reason, without notice and without severance payment or compensation.

The probabtion agreement should be made in writing for a period not exceeding 60 working days beginning from the first date of employment.
