Over 300 Civil Society Organizations Issue Open Letter to AU

Addis Ababa, December 3, 2021(Walta) – More than 300 Civil Society Organizations based in Ethiopia issued an open letter to the African Union highlighting attempts being made by certain actors at an unconstitutional change of government.

The letter was written for current Chairperson of the African Union and President of Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tishkedi on behalf of the Ethiopian people through the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, which includes more than 300 civil society organizations in Ethiopia and abroad.

Citing the June elections, the Union observer mission had confirmed in a statement that the elections were democratic beyond the limits of certain logistics and practices, the letter noted.

The Charter of the Union strongly opposes any unconstitutional or unlawful use of force; if so, the countries could be banned from membership.

However, despite the African Union’s efforts to bring peace to Ethiopia, it did not dare to issue a statement condemning the illegal and terrorist groups and some foreign countries trying to overthrow the democratically elected government by force.

The letter also condemned the African Union and the United Nations for choosing to remain silent, citing evidence leaked by Western and current diplomats plotting to overthrow the government with members of the terrorist group.
