Simien Mountains National Park’s 50th anniversary to be celebrated

The Simien Mountains National park’s 50th anniversary and the success in bringing the park out of the UNESCO’s endangered list is to be celebrated via different programs.

The Park, which is within the UNESCO’s heritage list, is to celebrate its 50th anniversary from Oct. 14-15, 2017 in the town of Debark, The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority said.

Public Relation Director with the Authority, Zerihun Zewde, noted that the event is scheduled to recognize stakeholders who played a key role in taking the park out of the endangered list and enabled it to its present status.

The event is expected to be attended by higher officials from federal and regional governments, other officials and stakeholders invited to attend and get recognitions.

The Simien Mountains National Park is the first natural world heritage site to be registered by UNESCO in 1978.  The Knife-edged broken cliffs, vast fields of fantastic rock scenery, endowed with an endless profusion of natural beauties and as it is the only park to harbor walia ibex; it became a world heritage site.

The park is found in the Amhara region sprawled in an area of 412 km2 including the Ras Dejen mountain, the highest pick of the country.
