Premier urges current generation to draw lessons from Adwa Victory and abate current challenges, barriers

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has called on the existing generation to repeat the victory of Adwa by overcoming current challenges and barriers.

The Premier made the call in connection with the 123rd anniversary of Ethiopia’s victory of Adwa, which will be celebrated tomorrow in different programs.

The victory of Adwa is historical as it guaranteed “Our sovereignty and made possible our flag to raise high instead of the colonizer’s.”

The victory laid the foundation for the current and the next generations to walk with their heads held high and to stand in front of the world, the Premier said in his congratulatory message.

Now is the time for the young generation to repeat the victory by defeating current challenges and barriers.

The Premier also underscored the importance of unity for a common goal. “The victory of Adwa teaches us that unity is strength,” he said.

The victory day will be marked with different programs tomorrow, including with a walking event from Menelik II Square to Adwa Dildiy after the end of the main celebration at Menelik II Square.

Half a million people are expected to attend the event, according to the Addis Ababa city administration.

The Battle of Adwa was fought on 1 March 1896 between Ethiopia and Italy near the town of Adwa.

Ethiopians under the command of Emperor Menelik II defeated over 20,000 well-armed Italian colonial forces at the battle of Adwa in Tigray regional state.

Ethiopia’s victory over Italy kept Ethiopia the only independent and uncolonized African country.
