House endorses revised electoral board proclamation

 The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has approved the Revised Proclamation on National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) today.

The proclamation tabled was approved with one abstention.

The proposal submitted by the Law, Justice and Democracy Affairs Standing Committee stated that the proclamation will enable NEBE to be organized independently.

The standing committee pointed out that the revision of the proclamation shows the government’s commitment to build democracy.

Members of the parliament debated on the combination of the board members to be primarily on competence and discipline while considering ethnic composition as much as possible.

Members of the board will be nominated by the prime minister and approved by the parliament. They will serve for 6 years.

The electoral board will be accountable for the House of People’s Representatives.
