Commission says Ethiopia has 10 million unemployed citizens

The Employment Creation Commission announced that 10 million people are unemployed in Ethiopia.

In this budget year, the country invested 9 billion birr out of 10 billion birr allocated to create job opportunities.

The Employment Creation Council led by Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen today held a discussion on good opportunities and future directions.

Though 53 percent of the Ethiopian population is capable to work, 20 percent of them are unemployed.

Unless the government works hard on job creation, the number of unemployed citizens may climb to 18 million by 2030. Over the last two and three years, the country was able to create 1.5 million jobs. According to study of Science Academy, the country has 1.6 million civil servants, who constitute 4 percent of job opportunity.

The country planned to create 3 million jobs by next year.
