Government arrests 59 officials on suspicion of corruption, terror attack

The Attorney General announced that 59 suspects have been arrested for alleged corrupt practices.

Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye told local journalists that the officials are from Public Procurement & Property Disposal Services, Food & Drug Administration Agency, and Ethiopian Water Works Construction Corporation.

According to the Attorney General, the suspects are allegedly involved in grand corruption committed within the institutions in foreign and local purchasing, procurement process and projects implementation.

He indicated that the office has been gathering evidences for the past five months to come up with investigation results.

In this regard, following a three-month investigation conducted within the Public Procurement and Property Disposal Service, about 23.7 million US dollars of public fund has been wasted during the procurement of 400 metric tons of wheat.

This wastage of wheat had negatively impacted on the government and the public at large and resulted in bread shortage in the country, he underlined. 

He added that the service has also mismanaged this state-owned enterprise and looted millions of dollars by undertaking illegal bids.

Likewise, those officials at Water Works Construction Corporation were detained for wasting 55 million birr of public fund during the procurement of construction materials particularly, steel, according to the Attorney General.

Furthermore, Food and Drug Administration Agency has made a 79 million birr purchase without any legal procedure, he indicated.

The federal police and National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) also detained individuals planning to carry out terrorist attack in alliance with global terror groups.
