Human Rights Council Commends Ethiopia/AU-Led Mediation Process in Sudan

The 41st session of the Human Rights Council has commanded Ethiopia and African Union (AU) for the peace deal reached last week between the parties in Sudan.

After two days of talks hosted by the Ethiopian and African Union (AU) Special Envoy, the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the Forces for Freedom and Change agreed on 5 July to establish a sovereign council.

They also reached agreement to release detainees, restore internet access, and conduct independent investigation into the measures taken to disperse the sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum.

In its yesterday’s session, the UN body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the globe, praised the role played by Ethiopia and AU.

Ambassador Zenebe Kebede, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN office at Geneva, addressed the 41st session of the Human Rights Council about Ethiopia’s stance and its role during the mediation process.

Mediators led by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat have been trying to broker a return to direct talks between the two sides.
