Danakil Depression-Otherworldly Landscape

Lake Asale

The Danakil Depression, which is part of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, is located at the north-eastern part of Ethiopia, within the Afar region.

Its temperature, in some months, rises up to 50° C and its northern extremes reach 116 meters below sea level making it one of the hottest and lowest points below sea level on the planet. The place is home to salt lakes, lava lakes, volcanoes, and colorful acidic springs – it’s a wonderful, alien environment.

Lake Afdera

The kaleidoscopic landscape of Dallol, Ethiopia’s most active volcano, Erta Ale (which means “Smoking Mountain” in the local Afar language), the two sale lakes Afrera and Asale, and the vast salt pans are astounding places to visit.
