PM Abiy Ahmed Calls South Sudan’s CFA Ratification Historic

Addis Ababa, July 17, 2024 (Addis Walta) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called South Sudan’s ratification of The Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) a historic moment for Ethiopia.

“Historic moment for Ethiopia as the Agreement on the Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework (CFA) is ratified by South Sudan” the Prime Minister tweeted on his official X (former Twitter) page.

The decision by the South Sudanese Government could be taken as a bold step with paramount diplomatic outcomes. PM Abiy underscored that “this diplomatic milestone marks a significant step in our collective aspiration for regional cooperation in the Nile Basin.”

The ratification of CFA by the Juba Government will provide impetus for working towards the establishment of the Nile Basin Commission.

South Sudan has become the latest country who ratify CFA following Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Burundi.

At least six countries should ratify the framework to establish the Nile Basin Commission and bring it into full effect.
