1.5 Million Volunteers to Take Part in Summer Volunteerism

Addis Ababa, June 5, 2022(Walta) – Addis Ababa City Administration Public Mobilization and Voluntary Service Commission said that around 1.5 million volunteers have finalized preparations to participate in voluntary activities to serve over 570 thousand citizens in the Capital.

Commission’s Commissioner Asefaw Tekele told Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that following PM Abiy Ahmed’s initiation and due emphasis on voluntary service, the commission has set a plan and started carrying out the services in early May to alleviate a range of socio-economic challenges.

Given the upcoming heavy and rainy season, renovation of dilapidated houses that belong to the destitute and elderly is already underway.

Accordingly, out of the plan to renovate some 340 thousand houses, over 1010 residents are under the refurbishment program, according to him.

Noting that efforts are being exerted to make 294 thousand destitute people part of the meal sharing program, he underlined that the society’s longstanding values of sharing meals must be acknowledged and sustained.

Aiming to reduce the challenge of shortage of blood in various hospitals, he indicated that there is a plan to collect 40 thousand units of blood.

He also stated that preparations are underway to involve higher institution students in the provision of tutorials to 100 thousand school children, and the plan is set to provide 20 thousand citizens with free healthcare services by getting medical students involved to collaborate with health professionals.

Similarly, efforts are underway to deploy over six thousand volunteers to assist traffic flow.

Close to one million volunteers would be assigned to look after planted trees. A number of volunteers are going to engage in disposing of sewage and waste materials as well as planting trees in various areas like SNNPRs. Moreover, books would be collected at the Abrehot Library.
