Corporation doubles sugarcane production

Addis Ababa, 12 August 2016 (WIC)- The Sugar Corporation said 96,000 hectares of land is covered by sugarcane to double production during the completed fiscal year.

Public Relations Head with the Corporation, Gashaw Aychiluhem, told WIC that 96,000 hectares of land is covered by sugarcane by the newly constructed ten mega sugar industry projects.

Gashaw noted that the sugarcane coverage has doubled as compared to the past six years.

The completion of construction of expansion projects of Fincha, Wonji Showa Sugar Factories and the renewal of the old Wonji Showa Sugar Factory are completed in the first Growth and Transformation Plan. These factories crush 36,250 tons of sugarcane per day, he added.

According to Gashaw, the Omo Kuraz Sugar Factories, which can crush 24,000 ton sugarcane per day, will be operational by next year.

Similarly, Tana Beles 1 and 2, Omo Kuraz 3 and 4 and Wolkait Sugar Factories will be operational in 2020.

It was noted that the sugar factory projects have created job opportunities for over 350,000 people both in contract and permanent carriers in the past five years.

Walta has learnt that over 100,000 people are generating income and leading their daily lives via the sugar factory projects.
