Ministry schedules to finish construction of 10 irrigation dams till next year

The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electric said that it is making relentless effort to finish construction of 10 irrigation dams up to end of the next year.

State Minister, Kebede Gerba, told WMC that the construction of 10 irrigation dams is well underway with an allocated budget of 50 billion birr.

Among the dams, the construction of Kesem and Tendaho irrigation dams is completed and they are ready for utilization.

Finishing works are also underway for the finishing of Megech, Rib and Gidabo irrigation dams. The remaining five dams are expected to be finished as of next year.

Frequent change of designs, lack of quality in construction, capacity to accomplish projects on time and increasing expenses are among the bottlenecks holding the sector back.

The Ministry of agriculture and Natural Resource Development is working to expand small and medium scale irrigation on 2.4 million hectares of land.

Finishing of dams under construction next year is expected to increase irrigation agriculture in the country.
