Oromiya targets 184 mln quintals this farming season

The Oromiya Agriculture and Natural Resources Bureau said that it has targeted to harvest 184.7 million quintals of production from main crop items during this Meher(farming) season.

Plant Development and Preservation Directorate Director with the Bureau, Dejene Meshesha, said that though the rain insufficiently appears, it is planned to collect 184.7 million quintals of production from 6 million hectares of land.

So far 85.6 percent of land is made ready for farming and 1.76 million hectares of land is already covered with crops.

Dejene added that 4.5 million quintals of different fertilizers is targeted to be distributed to farmers and so 3.2 million quintals is already delivered.

Similarly, 2 million quintals of improved seeds is being distributed.

According to the information released from the bureau, preparation to use 1,895,260 liters of different pesticides and insecticides is finalized.

In order to resist the El-Nino effects on productivity, different schemes are being implemented in the region, it was noted.

Water and soil conservation,  directing flood to arable lands, moisture retention and sustainable trainings in packages to farmers are among the mechanisms implemented to resist weather changes.

Walta has learnt that Oromiya has harvested 11.7 million quintals of production from 643,488 hectares of land during the previous Belg farming season.
