Benshangul-Gumuz expects 24 mln quintals from Meher farms

The Benshnagul-Gumuz region said that it has planned to produce nearly 25 mln quintals of produce from Meher season farming.

Region’s Agriculture Bureau Agriculture extension team leader, Shibabaw Tarekegn, told WMC that the region has already readied 849 thousand hectares of land for Meher farming of which the 467 thousand hectares of landn is covered by various seeds so far.

He said that cereals take major share of land covered by seeds so far as the oils and pulses have to wait time to be sowed.

According to him, 53 thousand quintals of fertilizer and over 3000 quintals of improved maize seed are distributed to farmers, an amount which could meet the demand the farmers made.

The supply of agricultural inputs has surged this year partially due to the fall in the price of fertilizers of all kinds, he added.

The region, according to him, has given extensive training for farmers on how to boost agricultural productivity.
