Amhara to galvanize public for vegetable farming, seedling plantation during rainy season

The Amhara Regional State Bureau of Agriculture has indicated that it has planned to mobilize the public for vegetable farming and seedling plantation during the rainy season.

Deputy Head of the Bureau, Aytenaw Endeshaw, noted that the region has been undertaking soil and water conservation tasks over 325 thousand hectares of land.

Trenches and other systems that are intended to boost soil fertility are implemented over the areas and the task undertaken in such areas is estimated to be worth 3 billion birr and more than 1.8 billion seedlings are expected to be planted in the region during the remaining months of the rainy season.

According to Aytenaw as the region has areas with weather and climate that is suitable for the development of coffee and other vegetables strategies are tailored by the bureau to tap the region’s potential in this respect.

Lack of protection of the already planted seedlings has made the campaign made so far not sufficiently fruitful and the bureau has planned to fill this gap and increase the forest coverage of the region from 13.1 percent to 15 percent.

The region has already distributed coffee seedlings to farmers that are scheduled to be planted side by side with the plantation of forest plant seedlings in different parts.
