House accomplishes duties successfully, endorses 64 legislations

Addis Ababa, 28 July, 2016(WIC)- The House of People’s Representatives(HPR) said it has accomplished it duties with successful performance and has endorsed 64 legislations during the completed budget year.

House Speaker, Abadula Gemeda, briefing journalists on the HPR’s annual performance today, noted that the house had started its duties with ratification of GTP II and has been closely scrutinizing performances of various government offices in the budget year.

In addition to supervising public offices’ quarterly performances, the house members have went to different bodies outside the capital and have closely followed up the performances, he said.

In order to strengthen its duties of supervision and follow-up the house has increased its standing committees from 16 to 18. It has newly established committee to look after the performances of the defense and intelligence sectors, he underscored.

Based on the report from the Office of the Federal Auditor, the house has ordered corrective measures to be taken up on government offices that have shown drawbacks, Abadulla reminded.

The house has been working in close collaboration with parliaments of other countries and this has helped to create contacts with parliaments of 32 countries.

Government Whip in the House, Asmelash Woldesillassie, on his part reminded that the House has endorsed legislations that were vital for the country in the stated period.

He responded to critics who allege that the House is free of oppositions and legislations are being endorsed without the necessary debate by saying that there is more debate than ever in the House and all issues are endorsed after intense discussion and debate.

The House has contributed its share to the tasks resolving issues related to incidents that happened in Amhara, Oromia and Gambella regional states, he noted.

The House has completed prepration of a design to construct a new building that is planned to serve for the coming 200 years. The House has planned to further strengthen the country’s democratic institutions and address public woes in an effective manner, he added.
