New institution to coordinate activities of building “green economy”

Addis Ababa, September 12 (WIC) – Ethiopia announced last Monday it is establishing a new institution to coordinate the activities of various government bodies to ensure the continuity of “green growth” in the country, as envisioned by the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

The new body is to be headed by Neway Gebreab, chief economic advisor in the prime minister’s office. The idea behind the new organization is to ensure consistency of governmental goals and actions with the nation’s green growth vision.

The institution is mandated to coordinate the activities of line ministries and various government bodies in economic and social spheres both at the federal and of regional government levels.

The institution is also tasked with raising funds for implementation of the green economy strategy and distributing these to stakeholders.

Ahmed Shide, Finance and Economic Development State Minister, said “the institution will put in place a strategy that ensures all development activities in federal and regional levels are free from causing pollution”.
