US welcomes Haile-Mariam’s Premiership

Addis Ababa, September 24, 2012 (WIC) – The United States has warmly welcomed the selection of Haile-Mariam Desalegn as Prime Minister and Demeke Mekonnen as Deputy Prime Minister, allAfrica.com reported.

A statement by US Department of State Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said: “We commend the government of Ethiopia for undertaking an historic, peaceful, and constitutional transition of power.”

According to EH, the statement added, “We have had a productive relationship with Haile-Mariam in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

We look forward to working with him in his new position to advance issues of mutual concern to the United States and Ethiopia, including strengthening economic development, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting regional security.”
