Heads of state meet over Lamu port project

Addis Ababa, 31 July 2014 (WIC) — Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn today met with three heads of state in Nairobi to deliberate on the progress of the Lamu Port Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET).

The heads of states including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Salva Kiir of South Sudan were updated on the project.

“We explored joint financing options for the LAPSSET Project whose 7 components require an estimated budget of $24.5 B,” twitted President Kenyatta after the deliberations.

The project is expected to open up the Northern region for development, and boost the economies of the nations involved.

LAPPSET project will comprise of a new road network, a railway line, an oil refinery at Lamu, oil pipeline, Isiolo and Lamu Airports and a free port at Lamu.

It will also involve the development of a new transport corridor from the new port of Lamu through Garissa, Isiolo, Mararal, Lodwar and Lokichoggio to branch at Isiolo to Ethiopia and Southern Sudan. (citizen news, Kenya)
