Referral laboratory system launched

Addis Ababa 07 August 2015 (WIC) – A referral laboratory backup system aimed at improving access to sustainable laboratory services for patients when laboratories at federal hospitals encounter problems, launched today.

The laboratory, at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute in Addis Ababa, will help to provide sustainable laboratory service at the federal level.

The system is needed to be introduced to provide sustainable laboratory service for patients when there is interruption at federal hospitals due to various causes.

With the introduction of the system, patients can now get laboratory service at the Institute if laboratories at hospitals failed to provide it.

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonen said the introduction of the national system will support the national effort to provide access to health services.

According to ENA, the national program is believed to improve the public’s access to laboratory services.
The Institute has signed agreement with five federal hospitals including Black Lion, Amanuel, St Paul, Alert and Gondar hospitals to start the service.
