Progress being made towards the creation of a Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle state in Somalia

Addis Ababa, 12 August 2015 (WIC) – The Somali Federal Government is pushing ahead with the formation of another Federal State comprising the regions of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, MoFA reported.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over a meeting in Mogadishu, attended by ministers from the two regions and the regional governors as well as the UN Special Representative, Nicolas Kay, on Saturday August 8, 2-015. 

Political and community leaders representing local communities have now agreed to come together in September for a state formation convention.

In the meantime, a 31-member technical committee to oversee the state formation process and make suggestions over venue for the proposed conference and for the future state capital.

President Mohamud spoke of the importance of “capacitating the existing federal states” and of encouraging development and reconciliation fronts, He also stressed the need for national healing and understanding on differences across Somalia.
