House of Federation elects Speaker, Deputy Speaker

Addis Ababa, 05 October, 2015(WIC) – Members of the 5th House of Federation have elected new Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the house.

In its first meeting chaired by the President of FDRE, Dr. Mulatu Teshome, the house has elected Yalew Abate, a representative from Amhara region, as Speaker of the House, and Mohammed Reshid, a representative from Somali region, as Deputy Speaker.

It is pursuant to Article 62(11) of the FDRE constitution which states that the first session of the House of Federation shall elect the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker that the 5th session elected the two representatives to serve the House with such a duty.

The Speaker and his Deputy were sworn in to serve the nations, nationalities and people’s they have represented and the House that elected them in a responsible and accountable manner.

Former Speaker of the House, Kassa Teklebirhan, has officially handed over his power to the newly elected speaker during the session.

The new House of Federation is expected to establish new standing committees and a committee that is vested with the power to interpret the constitution in the remaining processions of the first session.
