Electric Power Distribution Master Plan for Addis Ababa and Environs Finalized

Addis Ababa, June 13/2015(WIC) The 20 year Addis Ababa and Surrounding Area Electric Power Distribution Master Plan Study Project has reached it final stage and would be implemented in 2016.

The distribution master plan being carried out by Parsons Brinckkerhoff (PB) with 3.5 million USD is meant to meet the rapidly growing demand of Addis Ababa city and environs.

The project has to be implemented in three phases will cover 12 woredas in Oromia Regional State   and 10 sub-cities in Addis Ababa.

The study has proposed areas that need intervention and most of the substations are saturated and serving more than their capacity limit, General Manager of PB Oona Nanka-Bruce Parsons said.

“Since Addis Ababa is growing very fast, we have proposed projects on the short, medium and long terms to alleviate problems on the network”, she added.

CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, Azeb Asnake said on her part the distribution master plan project will help the city and the surrounding areas curb the electric power shortage within the next 20 years in line with the new city

master plan project that is being finalized by the city administration.

According to Azeb, the city and surroundings consume more than 60 percent of the total electricity generated by the country and the trend indicates that the demand is growing at alarming rate.
The country is currently generating 8,000 MW.(www.ena.gov.et)
