Ethiopia finalizes preparations to contribute to Trans-Africa highway

Addis Ababa, 1September 2015 (WIC) – Ethiopia has finalized its preparations to contribute its share for the Trans-Africa highway project which aims to connect Africa in road transport, Ethiopian Road Authority said.

Communication Director of the Authority,Samson Wondimu, said The 10,220 kilometers long Trans-Africa highway extends from Cairo,  to Cape Town,  and the road on the  Ethiopian side which extends through Azezo-Metema-Gonder-Addis Ababa-Hawassa-Moyale is  to be finalized and open for service in the near future.

According to him, the 185 kilometers long road extending from Azezo to Metema is asphalted.  A total of 978 kilometers road is to be finalized as part of this project.

Similarly, the road from Debre Markos to Lumame will be open for service in the coming three months, it was noted.

According to him, the road from Addis Ababa to Hawassa, 265 kilometers long, also is asphalted with 392 million birr cost aided from European Union and already delivering services
When the construction is completed, the road project is expected to interconnect African countries, he said.  Ethiopia will be beneficiary in using the Mombasa and Lamu Port, South Sudan as well.
