GTP-I lays strong foundation for structural transformation: Scholars

Addis Ababa, 04 October, 2015 (WIC) – The first Growth and Transformation Plan has laid a strong economic foundation that could ensure economic structural transformation of the country.

Economic scholars gathered for the 22nd General Assembly of the Ethiopian Economic Association (EEA) last Saturday confirmed that the performances of the country in the past five consecutive years have a significant contribution to economic transformation.

The scholars have deeply deliberated on papers presented by scholars in relation to the prospects and challenges of the structural transformation in Ethiopia, assessing the performance of the first GTP, reflecting on the second GTP.

The scholars in the panel discussion unanimously agree that the infrastructure development being carried out by Ethiopia in the first GTP will be crucial inputs for the implementation of the second GTP.
One of the research presenters Dr. Tadele Ferede ¬¬¬¬¬added that the country’s investment in the power sector will provide sufficient power to the economy in the second GTP.

“The second GTP aspires to improve quality and competitiveness in all aspects of the country’s economic sector,” He said.
He added that one can imagine what Ethiopia will look like when all power and rail projects come to fruition.

Another participant of the assembly Dr. Eyob Tesfaye also emphasized that there must be a government involvement in creating market friendly environment, putting in place coherent economic policy, ensuring macro-economic stability, creating high value economic and political institution and ensuring good governance.
