City government urges obedience to the National Flag proclamation

Addis Ababa, 13 October, 2015(WIC)- The Addis Ababa city Government urges all stake holders to play a significant role to make citizens obedient to proclamation 654/2001, which stipulates on the rules and regulations of the national flag.

Panelists who attended a forum on the national flag have expressed their concern that even though the proclamation was ratified and binding, most of the citizens are yet to show obedience to it.

Zefenia Alemu, a Lawyer, presented a research paper on the forum entitled “the Ethiopian national flag on the period of renaissance,” during the panel discussion, said that awareness of the people about the  rules and regulations of the national flag is very limited.

According to Zefenia, legal bodies, police, security officers, intellectuals and media houses are responsible for the application and raising awareness on the proclamation of the national flag. He added that strict supervision and follow up is needed for the execution of the rules and regulations on the national Flag.

The National flag is a symbol for existence, sovereignty, unity and equality of the people, Zefenia noted. Coordinated mobilization of the pubic on the rules and regulations of the nation flag is significant to increase awareness and knowledge of the public this in turn enables to effectively implement the proclamation, he added.

Lack of awareness on the rules and regulations lead to impracticability of over 98 percents of the rules on the national flag, Zefenia underscored.  Respecting the national flag is giving value for the constitution as well, he noted.

The panel discussion pointed out that anybody who violates the rules of the national flag will be punishable based on the proclamation.
