Ministry calls up on media to mobilize the public

Addis Ababa, 15 October, 2015(WIC)-The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has called up on the media to play a role in mobilizing the public for various developmental endeavors.

At a consultation forum with WIC journalists and heads of departments on the role of the media during the GTP-II period, the Ministry noted that the country is at a critical juncture to lay the foundation for transferring to a middle income level and the media should play a key role in fostering public participation.

Minister of the Ministry of Urban development and Housing, Mekuria Haile, said the media should improve the way they operate to contribute to the effort of abating administrative loopholes.

The Ministry has created job opportunities for about 10 million people during the first Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP-I) period, which is almost triple of its schedule, 3.2 million.

Mekuria noted that mobilizing the huge potential of productive human resource in the country can significantly contribute to the effort of attaining GTP-II goals and the media should tailor strategies taking this in to account during the stated period.

The Ministry has tailored strategies to organize youth in urban development and prepared a draft for its implementation, the Minister noted.

Job creation, enterprise development, civil service reform, and good governance shall be the focal points under which the Ministry has planned to organize youth, Mekuria explained.

WIC journalists and department heads on their part expressed their determination to provide media works that are reflective of both the growth in the country and the problems faced in the process.

The Ministry is expected to make continued consultations with other media houses and stakeholders, Walta learnt.
