Food aid reaches drought affected district of Dodota

Addis Ababa, 26 November 2015 (WIC)–  Dodota, a district in Oromia region, Arsi Zone, Woreda Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Office said food aid and edible oil is distributed for El-Nino induced drought affected areas.

Head with the Office, Tahir Sinino, told WIC that 6,548 quintals of wheat, 415 quintals of pea and 148 liters of edible oil has been distributed to 51,936 people dwelling in 15 kebeles.

Tahir noted that the number of citizens to be aided is expected to increase by 5,297 until January if El-Nino’s effect continues unabated.

Aid is distributed from two to five rounds with respect to their needs and number of family members.

One of the dwellers in Dire Kiltu Kebele, Woizero Rukia Saniwoyo, said that she has received 75 kilograms of wheat so far.

She further said that the aid is delayed for some time and life of her family with five members was in danger. She also called up on the government to strengthen aid supply in the future.

Ussa Edris, from the same woreda, also said that he expects some crop products to be cultivated this year from his farm land due to the drought.

It was noted that over 77,500 animals are suffering due to lack of animal fodder and water but efforts are being consolidated to fill these gaps.

The zone is intensively working to support 3,241 students to attend their classes regularly, he said.

He further noted that public servants are contributing 25 percent of their salary and higher officials of the woreda are also contributing 50 percent of their salary for the drought victims.

Walta has learnt that about 139,580 people dwelling in 15 kebeles of Dodota woreda.
